Top of the Lake

Created by Jane Campion (The Piano) and Gerard Lee, Top of the Lake is a brooding, psychologically complex crime drama that unfolds in isolated landscapes—both geographic and emotional. First premiering in 2013, the series spans two intense seasons: Top of the Lake and Top of the Lake: China Girl (2017). Each season is anchored by a powerful performance from Elisabeth Moss as Detective Robin Griffin, a woman haunted by past trauma as she confronts abuse, corruption, and systemic misogyny.

Season 1 is set in remote New Zealand, where Robin returns to her hometown to investigate the disappearance of a pregnant 12-year-old girl. As the case unravels, Robin is forced to confront the ghosts of her own abuse, while navigating a toxic small-town culture dominated by men and secrecy. The haunting atmosphere—both beautiful and oppressive—mirrors Robin’s internal struggle.

Season 2, China Girl, relocates to Sydney, Australia, where Robin investigates the murder of an unidentified Asian sex worker found in a suitcase. This season dives deeper into motherhood, reproductive rights, and human trafficking, while Robin attempts to connect with the daughter she gave up years earlier.

Both seasons are dark, slow-burning, and emotionally heavy, often more interested in character psychology than conventional crime-solving. Campion’s direction emphasizes mood and silence, allowing the trauma of the characters—and the weight of what’s unsaid—to hang in the air. The female perspective is front and center, and the series doesn't flinch from the realities of power, abuse, and recovery.

While no third season has been confirmed, fans continue to hope for closure or further exploration of Robin’s story. A speculative Season 3, titled Top of the Lake: Black Ice, could take place in the harsh Arctic north of Canada or Scandinavia—where Robin is sent on assignment to investigate the death of a climate activist under suspicious circumstances. In the icy wilderness, themes of isolation, environmental justice, and corporate corruption could intersect with Robin’s enduring quest for truth and healing.

Top of the Lake is not your typical crime series. It's lyrical, emotionally raw, and visually stunning. Though challenging at times, it offers a rare depth in both story and performance. If there’s one detective drama that deserves a final act, it’s this one.
