Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is one of the most anticipated films in the newly restructured DC Universe. Scheduled for release on June 26, 2026, it serves as a pivotal entry in James Gunn and Peter Safran's "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters" slate, following Superman (2025) and Creature Commandos. This version of Supergirl promises a more complex, emotionally charged take on the character, marking a stark contrast from previous portrayals.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, best known for I, Tonya and Cruella, and written by Ana Nogueira, the film is based on the acclaimed eight-issue comic series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. James Gunn has publicly praised the screenplay as a deeply moving and expansive adaptation, exceeding expectations and honoring the tone of the original graphic novel.
The story centers on Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, portrayed by Milly Alcock. Alcock, widely recognized for her role in House of the Dragon, was chosen for her ability to capture Kara’s raw strength, emotional trauma, and resilience. Unlike her cousin, Kara did not grow up on Earth. Instead, she lived on a fragment of Krypton, witnessing unimaginable suffering and death before arriving on Earth. This backstory shapes her personality as someone far less optimistic and much more battle-hardened than Superman.
The plot follows Kara as she travels the cosmos with Krypto the Superdog, seeking solitude and purpose. On her 21st birthday, she encounters Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young alien girl whose father was murdered by the warlord Krem of the Yellow Hills. Determined to avenge her father’s death, Ruthye pleads for Supergirl’s help. Reluctantly, Kara joins her on a journey across dangerous planets, facing moral challenges, inner demons, and deadly enemies.
Joining the cast is Eve Ridley as Ruthye and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem. Notably, Jason Momoa is set to appear as Lobo in a surprise cameo. While Lobo was not part of the original comic arc, he has been added to the film to create structural balance in the screenplay and to help anchor the three-act format typical of feature films.
Filming began in early 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios in the UK, with location shoots in Iceland and Scotland. Production wrapped in May 2025, allowing ample time for post-production and visual effects work ahead of its summer 2026 release. The film is expected to feature a mix of practical and digital effects, especially to bring the alien landscapes and space travel sequences to life.
What sets this Supergirl film apart is its emotional tone and philosophical depth. It explores themes of vengeance, justice, identity, and the weight of legacy. By positioning Kara as a flawed but deeply empathetic character, the film aims to offer a fresh perspective on heroism in the DC Universe. With strong performances, a thought-provoking script, and cosmic-scale storytelling, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is poised to be a milestone in the evolving DC film franchise.
