Now a seasoned mentor working as a consultant for youth intervention programs nationwide, Porter is brought back to Los Angeles when his former center faces closure due to budget cuts and political pressure. The city’s new solution? A controversial experimental program that merges athletics with technology, mental health counseling, and education.

At the center of the story is 17-year-old Isaiah “Zay” Freeman (newcomer Caleb McLaughlin), a gifted quarterback from South Central L.A. who’s been arrested for car theft and gang association. With a criminal record threatening his future and no support system to turn to, Zay enters the program reluctantly.
