The animated sensation KPop Demon Hunters is officially getting a sequel, with Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix confirming plans to continue the story after the film’s record-breaking success.
Netflix’s Biggest Animated Hit
Since its premiere in June, KPop Demon Hunters has become Netflix’s most-watched English-language animated film of all time, surpassing Red Notice with more than 236 million views. The film also proved itself in theaters during its sing-along screenings in August, opening at No. 1 with an impressive $19.2 million debut.
The movie’s soundtrack played a huge role in its success, breaking records by landing four songs in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 at once, led by Huntr/x’s “Golden.” Fans around the world continue to rewatch the film, fueling streaming numbers and making a sequel one of Netflix’s most in-demand projects.

The Sony and Netflix Partnership
Sony and Netflix first struck a deal in 2021, with Netflix covering the film’s $100 million budget plus an additional $25 million fee for full streaming rights. Sony retained a share of soundtrack and publishing revenue, while Netflix secured exclusive control of merchandise.
What started as a risk turned into a major win. Industry insiders estimate Sony could see profit margins as high as 30 percent, and Netflix has gained one of its most successful animated properties to date. The strong partnership was helped by Netflix animation chief Hannah Minghella, who previously worked at Sony alongside current Sony Animation president Kristine Belson.
The Creative Team Returns
Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who co-wrote the original, are expected to return for the sequel. Both have expressed their excitement about continuing the story of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey as they juggle superstardom with their secret lives as demon hunters.

What’s Next for KPop Demon Hunters
Talks are still in the early stages, with Netflix and Sony working to finalize production details, but the future looks bright for the franchise. With its global popularity, strong theatrical momentum, and a soundtrack dominating charts, KPop Demon Hunters has cemented itself as a cultural phenomenon.
The sequel is now officially in development, and fans will soon get to see the next chapter of Huntr/x unfold.
