Season 11 of The Brokenwood Mysteries premiered in April 2025, continuing the long-running New Zealand crime series that has charmed audiences around the world with its blend of quirky humor, rural charm, and clever murder mysteries. This season, comprised of six feature-length episodes, once again follows Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd as he tackles a new wave of strange and puzzling deaths in the deceptively quiet town of Brokenwood.

Neill Rea reprises his role as DSS Mike Shepherd, whose love for country music and unconventional investigative style remains central to the show’s appeal. His by-the-book partner, Detective Kristin Sims, played by Fern Sutherland, continues to provide a grounded counterbalance to Shepherd’s offbeat instincts. Cristina Serban Ionda returns as the eccentric pathologist Dr. Gina Kadinsky, whose forensic brilliance is matched only by her peculiar charm. The fourth episode, “How the Other Half Dies,” shifts focus to Brokenwood’s wealthiest residents, one of whom is killed in a bizarre chandelier accident. Beneath the polished surface of the elite lies a tangled web of jealousy and deceit. “The End of the Line,” episode five, takes the team to a school leadership camp, where a science teacher is found dead mid-zip-line. The case reveals simmering tensions among staff and students, raising disturbing questions about hidden relationships.

The season finale, “An Oades to Christmas,” delivers both dark humor and holiday tension as a man dressed as Santa dies mysteriously by the roadside. At first believed to be a heart attack, the case takes a bizarre turn when the cause of death is found to be electrocution—adding a signature touch of Brokenwood’s oddball flair.

Behind the scenes, longtime writer Tim Balme led the writing team alongside new and returning contributors. The direction across the season is split among several seasoned directors, each bringing their own visual flavor to the picturesque New Zealand setting.
